Fulbright Symposium Circular
Indigenous People in an Interconnected World
SETTING ![]()
CLIMATE
The
Darwin region has a tropical climate with a cycle of a wet and a dry season. As July is in the middle of the dry season it is unlikely to rain during the symposium. Day temperatures in July have an average minimum of 19°C and average maximum of 30°C. The days are pleasantly warm and sunny. Swimwear is highly recommended, however, the evenings can be cool and it may be useful to bring a light jacket.
VENUE AND DATES
The symposium sessions will be held from July 24th to 27th at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin. The Museum is located in extensive grounds that overlook Fanny Bay and the Beagle Gulf. Its collection of Aboriginal art and material culture is of international standing. The Museum has pleasant indoor and outdoor areas and a licensed cafe/restaurant.

SESSIONS ![]()
The sessions will start at 9.00 am and finish at 5.30 pm. They will be integrated with short films and videos by Indigenous film-makers or about Indigenous cultures. The sessions will focus on four themes:
• the globalisation of Indigenous cultures;
• Indigenous lifeways, cultural tourism and mining;
• creating identity in the information age;
• social strategy and policy.
The final session of the symposium will be led by a discussion panel. Each member of the panel will present a short outline of their views on the main issues raised by symposium discussions and on future directions that might be taken in relation to In digenous cultures and an interconnected world. These issues will be opened to general discussion.
PRE-CIRCULATED PAPERS
Participants are asked to send both a hard and disc copy of their paper to Claire Smith at MAGNT on or before June 30th. Papers delivered after that date are not guaranteed inclusion in the volume of pre-circulated papers. Participants are asked to include a plain English abstract and are encouraged to use maps and photographs in their paper. A copy of the volume of pre-circulated papers will be distributed to participants.
PRESENTATIONS
Participants are asked to keep their presentations to 10 minutes only. The presentation is simply to draw out the main points of the pre-circulated paper. It should be delivered in relatively plain English in order to make it as accessible as possible to a broad audience. Presentations will be followed by a few minutes of questions with a panel discussion at the end of the session.
PUBLICATION
Selected papers will be published by Allen and Unwin, publishers of the Australian Fulbright Series. This year it is likely that publication will be undertaken in international collaboration with a North American university press. Papers which lie outside the theme of the symposium volume, but which are of suitable standard, will be directed to relevant refereed journals.
STALLS
Stalls will show-case Indigenous works and initiatives in art, print, multi-media and cultural tourism. A book stall will contain recent books by participants in the symposium. Other stalls will be presented by Indigenous publishing and film/video production houses.
WORKSHOPS
Workshops for Indigenous participants only will be held in collaboration with the symposium on topics such as art marketing, Indigenous media, cultural tourism, mining, and inter-active software. In general, these workshops will be held immediately prior to, or after, the symposium. They will be co-ordinated by Top End Indigenous community groups and organisations.
BROADCAST COVERAGE
Broadcast coverage of the symposium will be organised in collaboration with national and regional Indigenous Media associations. We anticipate that this will involve Indigenous broadcast and journalism students from communities throughout the Kimbe rley and Top End.
