Brief Format

So that we can try to put the written material from your brief on the World Wide Web, please stay as close as possible to the following format so that we can be consistent. If possible, word process the document and save it to a diskette. When we are ready to mark up the text for the web, I'll ask you to bring in the brief on diskette.

TITLE:

Try not to make it too long. You may use the title as given on the syllabus.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE BRIEF TOPIC:

In no more than two paragraphs, describe the general theme of the brief topic. Be as concise as possible as in:

Barry Fell is one of many people who believe that many people visited the Americas before the arrival of the Viking or Columbus. He suggests that evidence abounds in many places around the hemisphere, especially in ancient script left by the explorers. The evidence is weak and has been challenged by scholars with greater expertise.

MAJOR SOURCES ON THE TOPIC:

Here list anywhere from 5-10 sources, both pro and con, about the topic. This does not mean you have to read the book or article, but you should scan it for its main arguments so you know where the author stands on the topic. Give a brief annotation of the work telling what its about. At minimum, have the author(s) name(s), date of publication, full title, publisher name and place if a book, for each publication. Try to put it in anthropological reference style as in the Student Anthropologist's Handbook section. If you don't get full bibliographic information, I'll ask you to track it down. You may also use other media than books, such as web pages, but try to find a few print media, please.

WEB RESOURCES ON THE TOPIC:

Are there any world wide web or other internet resources on the topic? What are they? Give full URL or internet addresses, plus a brief description of each.

YOUR ASSESSMENT OF THE TOPIC:

True, false, maybe? What are the key concerns you have about the topic? What do your readings from class have to say about the topic, if anything?
