Video Guide

1996, BBC Horizons, color, 52 minutes, Danielle Peck and Alex Seabourne, producers. Reburial of human remains at the Crow Creek site, South

Summary:
The video examines Native American concerns about the treatment of human remains from those claimed to be their ancestors. Responses range from outright rejection of archaeology to cooperation with archaeologists on tribal projects. The views of archaeologists are also examined, with explanations of the types of research conducted on human remains and the benefits derived from them. One successful project between the University of Nebraska and the Omaha tribe is presented, interviewing anthropologist Karl Reinhard and Omaha tribal historian Dennis Hastings. Also of interest is a segment on Iowa's successful burials law.

Questions:

  1. When did collecting of Indian skeletal remains begin and what are some reasons why?
  2. Who were some of the key figures in collecting remains?
  3. Why are contemporary Indian people concerned about the remains?
  4. Why do some Indian people reject archaeology and its findings?
  5. What benefits can be derived from studying human remains?
  6. Why do you think the Omaha project was so successful?
  7. Do you agree that archaeology is at a crossroads over the issue?
